Stories in Digital Media (SIDM) was a blog run by a few students and the professor Frieder Nake, part of the former Digital Media programme in the state of Bremen, Germany. By the end of the first decade of the millennium, the web and digital technology were advancing at an unprecedented pace in the social and artistic sphere. Developments were exciting, and we kept a log of some events and took time to reflect.

What you see here is a rendition of the content as it was back then, in a different, static archival representation. Enjoy this glimpse into a hopeful and exciting past.

I do know both lecturers. Daniel is a young PhD candidate of Frieder Nake's. He taught a computer games class last winterterm (with C++ ... I can't remember exactly) which I enjoyed a lot ... very practical and hands-on like. And he was at Mark Amerika's workshop. Bernd Robben is a bit older and a lecturer, also former PhD of Frieder's, well known for his Media theory class. They will probably come for the HFK introduction I just announced here. There, you can meet them and get a "live" impression. I think, they are both fantastic and knowlegeable guys and it is great, what they are planning to set up. Here is by the way the link for a documentation we did with Bernd Robben after our theory class. Hope this helps a bit.

And what about this being a Bachelor's course? I heard that those normally won't be counted as a Master's course. In this case it might be a question of negotiation, as Andreas Breiter would say. BTW: I plan to organize another trip to the Transmediale, as well, since the other trip was pretty much fun!

Until now it seems like a DM Bachelor course. Maybe there is room for some deals (Daniel is checking it) but normally, in this DM program, no course that was announced for bachelors was then turned into a Master's course. But a Master's course is mostly open for Bachelors. But it seems, like the Informatik guys can do both ... so maybe there is hope for those Masters desperately seeking credits. Anyhow, you always have the possibility to negotiate something called "Independent Study" - actually, in the regulations it says, we are even strongly supported in doing something like this. What it implies is, that you can actually earn credits for nearly anything, that you negotiate beforehand. ;-)

Very polite of you adding in parenthesis the names of this other two Universities. In the original announcement they are not even mention.

I would not take this personal. I think the emphasis was put onto the fact that also the "artists" and not just the "scientists" are invited. That is why, I guess, the others are simply not mentioned - but of course also welcome. I know, some of us feel more like a stepchild than others. Not everyone knows about our super 4-university system and especially people who do such a course somehow for the first time for "Digital Media". That is why, I am promoting news like this ... otherwise such information gets lost and no one knows about really "interdisciplinary" endeavors. Dr. NN and myself, you both should get back to your thesis instead of moaning ... enough distraction and uni bashing for today :-)

this course started today, and here are some facts: maybe the most important thing for DM-Master students: it is in german. as already announced, visiting exhibitions is part of this course. in particular we are going to kunsthalle, weserburg, edith-russ haus, oldenburg and transmediale, berlin. in the schedule, there are sessions on thursday, 13-15h, but those won't take place every week - the time is used for the exhibitions and also for a workshop-day (Sa 01.11.: 13:00 - 20:00). the main work of the course will be an interactive installation, done in random-teams of three. techniques and programming languages used are completely open, but C++ with the library SDL under Windows with Visual Studio is "supported" by the the professor. personally i will try out openFrameworks about credits: bernd robben said, it should be possible via an independent study. (in total not more then 8 ECTS can be done via I.S. in our master, as far as i know. ) most participants of the course are informatics students from the Uni, so there is still a need of more people with other skills! some guys from hfk wanna join??? please, please, please :)
