So what´s going on.

October 28th, 2009 by derjan

The lectures started at all universities now and the most of the new students arrived in the master programme as well as in the bachelor degree courses.

There´ll be the master retreat at Verden on November 6th and as I´m an junior in the master programme I´m really looking forward to it.

To give an brief overview: There are 5 projects which will start in the next term, mandatory lectures started already and it´s up to us to form our groups in the next weeks, months. Just have look at the projects page on the official programmes website to retrieve an overview.

So, I´m a parcitipant within the upcoming Serious Games : Entertainment Computing project at the university. Recently I stumbled upon this blog called acagamic.com of an Ph.D. Candidate in the research field of Serious Games. His academic presentations are also online on slideshare . Could be also of interest for the parcitipants of the mobile gaming project at the University of Applied Sciences Bremen ?

Might be the right to time to distribute the url of this blog and to have a look if there´ll be a bit more parcitipation in the future to improve the communication between the different projects and institutions? We´ll see.

    i like the term “serious games” so much :) i would think that games by definition are not serious…

    acagamic.com -> seems like a great resource! thx :)

    I hope some of the new students have the motivation to look up this blog and even contribute. Although this blog turned to be a general blog about all things digital media, this post is a good indicator that it’s still about the programme.

    Actually. My strongest interest so far is related to the subterm human computing. For example, as you are aware of iPhoto´s face recogniton functionality – there is an mandatory user interaction to retrieve classifiers to match prior detected faces. I.e. training via a decent user interaction on a subset of suggestions… Which is actually a simple “yes or not game”.

    In general semi-automatic algorithms might be much more sufficent and accurate.
    And might be the solution to retrieve curical data on complex problems, more or less an game like interaction to motivate the user … also for evaluation purposes, usability test … but just theory up till now ;)

    You´ll know, just add a bit of human intelligence to the AI to solve NP problems. And as P = NP is THE unsolved problem, don´t mind to solve it in theory or via computer science, find a workaround involving the best problem solving device you´re capable of. And that´s your brain ;)

    So, my interest is not directly on the gaming topic, more on the serious aspect of human computer interaction via game like interaction.

    there is some interesting artistic work from aaron koblin (http://www.aaronkoblin.com/work.html), dealing with HumanIntelligenceTasks, eg: http://www.tenthousandcents.com/
