30 years of Space Invaders
Monday, June 30th, 2008Did you know that Space Invaders drove the Japanese so crazy, that the coins which were used to get a credit to play the arcade ran into a shortage? That it was programmed, designed and engineered by only one guy? Find more interesting facts here.
I would say, together with Pac Man, Tennis for Two (Pong) and Breakout, Space Invaders is one of the most famous and influential Video Games of all time. This month it turns 30 years!
The Website Is Down – a Movie
Sunday, June 29th, 2008Just another video clip about the everyday life of a “web guy”? Maybe, but it’s been done great. And of course it’s funny. Check out this short film here.

Dear Readers!
Saturday, June 28th, 2008Stories in Digital Media is 3 months old now and I would thank all contributers for their work, inspiration, critique and encouragement.
There are some plans for the future, including a reworked Layout, a new Logo, some additional functionality (to be discussed) and editorial refinements (cannot be too precise yet).
If you are a reader please comment on anything you ever wanted to comment regarding this very thing here but never found the right place to do this. Write your critique, ideas, wishes, etc. Thanks!

Blogwatch: we make money not art
Tuesday, June 24th, 2008More than a blog – an institution – we make money not art writes about contemporary art for several years now. Their in-depth research and coverage does not only cover digital but also media art in general from places all over the world (right now they cover China). Be sure to check the blog regularly if you have any interest in contemporary art.
Wii Spray: Interaction in Digital Street Art
Thursday, June 19th, 2008The last few years there was pretty much going on in Digital Street Art (compare Graffiti Research Lab).
Wii Spray is another contribution to this art form. Martin Lihs, student of the Bauhaus Universität Weimar, has chosen to design a digital Spraycan for his Diploma thesis. The picture clearly says it all.

Firefox 3.0 Download Day
Tuesday, June 17th, 2008Today the final version of Firefox 3.0 has been released.
The Mozilla guys want to break a world record in most downloaded application within 24 hours. So today is the Download Day (actually, it starts at Tuesday, 7pm and ends at Wednesday, 7pm). Help them break the record by downloading an application most of you would download anyway by clicking on the image below!
And then?
Saturday, June 14th, 2008This morning a friend of mine asked me the following questions:
What is it, that you are studying?
For what is it for?
What can you do with it after your graduation?
Honestly, I did not really know how to answer these questions efficiently let alone satisfyingly. I mean, of course I have a personal plan, but this is not digital media as a pure thing – as digital media is a mixture of different disciplines and backgrounds. There is not one intended final use case or scenario for what we are studying. There is no job called “Digital Media Guy or Girl”.
Anyhow, I struggled to give at least a small hint about what digital media is and for what it can or could be used for as I simply did not know where to start explaining. Most people just want to get a very short answer. Maybe it would be better to avoid these questions after all or to make up some fake job description.
How do you deal with these kind of encounters?
